Two thousand live video feeds, one wall.
Real moving footage — HLS streams straight from the Caltrans media server, six at a time. Beyond California, another 21,000 official cameras publish a new frame every one to five minutes instead, so those tiles play the agency's own recent frames as a time-lapse rather than sitting on a frozen JPEG. Switch to the globe to see where every feed actually is.
Video where it exists, stills where it does not. Most transport agencies publish only periodic JPEGs; Caltrans is the rare one that streams real video, and 2,305 of its cameras do. The wall labels which is which rather than calling both “live”. Roughly half the published stream URLs are dead encoders — those fall back to the still automatically.
Where these come from. Government open-data portals and opt-in webcam directories — cameras whose operators chose to publish them. Feeds from unsecured private cameras are not included and will not be: those devices are exposed by misconfiguration rather than consent.
